avoyelles parish master plan

Jump ahead to: Vision and Goals; Community or Workforce

The parish of Avoyelles developed a master plan in 2005 to help guide the sustainable growth and development of the parish.   Parish leaders and citizens came together during the process to outline a vision, goals, and priorities for development based on the resources and assets the parish has that make it conducive to specific industries and developments.

Vision and Goals

Vision   To make Avoyelles Parish a great place to live, work and recreate!

Goal 1:  Preserve the rural heritage and culture of Avoyelles Parish.

Goal 2:  Pursue modest growth with quality.

Goal3:  Instill a unified parish approach to economic development.

The Community
The economy of Avoyelles Parish has historically been agri-business based, which continues to have a significant influence on development, environmental quality, and the overall economy; however, it has diversified to include gaming, oil services, banking, and agri-business.   Its strengths as a location for development include:

      1. Atchafalaya River 18 ft. depth port;
      2. 1,500 acres of available land for development;
      3. Culture and heritage/quality of life;
      4. Central location in the state; and
      5. Supportive political state leadership.

Avoyelles Parish benefits from its location in the Central Louisiana 8-parish region, which has experienced significant growth from new business locations in the last several years.  Union Tank Car decided upon the Region for its second U.S. production facility, and suppliers of plastic and paperboard box containers located to serve Proctor & Gamble’s detergent facility in conjunction with its expansion.   These companies found the sites and workforce, as well as the business climate to meet their needs beyond other U.S. locations.

Workforce Development
The location of these new businesses has increased employment and skill level of workers in the Region.   Not only did the state of Louisiana fund customized training for workers, but education institutions created programs to prepare a future workforce for anticipated growth in the Region.

In Avoyelles Parish, the public school system continues to provide curriculum in agri-business, only at a higher technical level, at Louisiana’s only agri-business school Louisiana School of Agricultural Sciences.  Each high school has established academies of learning to train students in skill sets needed to work in industry-specific areas including agricultural sciences; family & consumer sciences; business; technology; welding; engineering; and construction.

Louisiana’s education system transfers credits earned at public high schools, so students can also earn credits toward two and four year college by taking advance courses.
